TYPES OF SYNTHESIS IN WRITING

Synthesizing means comparing different material and highlighting similarities, differences, and connections.  When a writer synthesizes successfully, he or she presents new ideas based on interpretations of other evidence or arguments. There are two types of synthesis that actually many students did not know. Here, I give those two kinds and also the example.

THE EXPLANATORY SYNTHESIS: An explanatory synthesis helps readers to understand a topic. Writers explain when they divide a subject into its component parts and present them to the reader in a clear and orderly fashion. Explanations may entail descriptions that re-create in words some object, place, event, sequence of events, or state of affairs. The purpose in writing an explanatory essay is not to argue a particular point, but rather to present the facts in a reasonably objective manner. The explanatory synthesis does not go much beyond what is obvious from a careful reading of the sources. You will not be writing explanatory synthesis essays in this course. However, at times your argumentative synthesis essays will include sections that are explanatory in nature.

ASSESSING WRITING

Writing is one of four main skills in English and an interactive process of constructing meaning which involves producing, receiving and processing information in the written form. In learning process, it’s very important to know how far students’ ability in writing skill. The teacher has to assess their students’ writing skill by conducting writing test. There are four types of writing assessment: imitative writing, intensive writing, responsive writing, and extensive writing. Before conducting the test, the teacher has to make syllabus and blue print of the test items. After the teacher conduct writing test, it’s important to make quantitative analyse to know whether the test item successful or not. In scoring students'writing, it is important to the teacher to look at rubric to make analytic scoring. As I have done writing assessment before, here I provide RUBRIC PENILAIAN WRITING to help you do assessment in writing. Download here. Hopefully, it will be useful.

Scientific Writing

So far, college students are still confused in subject scientific writing. In fact, they often experience such as difficulties to write what to write in any scientific writing products, like Research Proposal, Skripsi (Final Project), Academic Paper, Synthesis etc. To help them reduce the obstacles in writing scientifically, here I give some tips.

Building Writers from Readers
    ____________________________________________________________________

We are all readers before being writers. We read far more than we write. As scientists, we read far more than the average reader; and what we read is far more complicated. Is it possible to become a better writer by building on our reading skills?  A priori, it does not seem possible. Reading is more of an experience. If the writing is clear, concise, interesting, fluid, and organised, we enjoy the experience of discovering the information relevant to our needs. If the experience is not pleasant, rarely do we blame the writer, and rarely do we search for the cause of this unpleasantness, blaming instead our short patience or our lack of knowledge; after all, If what we read is not clear to us, it must be because we fail to understand. The failure is ours, not the writer's. Twisted logic. If restaurant food is making you sick, what is needed: a better immune system or a better managed restaurant?

This is my summary of Literary Appreciation subject

Literature and Literary Appreciation

“Literature consists of those writings which interpret the meaning of nature and life, in words of charm and power, touched with the personality of the author, in artistic forms of permanent interest”, that is what Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933) said about literature. In other words, we can simplify that literature is an art work that is revealed from human life and experience by using language that commonly beautiful which can amuse and educate the readers whether in oral or written form such as novel, poetry, poem, etc.
