This is my summary of Literary Appreciation subject
Literature and Literary Appreciation
“Literature
consists of those writings which interpret the meaning of nature and life, in
words of charm and power, touched with the personality of the author, in artistic
forms of permanent interest”, that is what Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933) said
about literature. In other words, we can simplify that literature is an art
work that is revealed from human life and experience by using language that
commonly beautiful which can amuse and educate the readers whether in oral or
written form such as novel, poetry, poem, etc.
In
studying literature, surely, we will meet a section named literary appreciation
that Ogenlewe (2006) posits that ‘literary appreciation refers to the
evaluation of works of imaginative literature as an intellectual or academic
exercise.’ It means that literary appreciation isa process of understanding,
enjoying and evaluating literary works in which the readers make judgment about
the quality or value of literary work, give an opinion about a given work, classify
and at last appreciate the literary work. By reading literary works it is
supposed that the students can explore their own lives and improve their
logical thinking skills and it means that the students are able to gain
pleasure and understanding for the literature, understand its value and
importance and admire its complexity. In additional, by appreciating literary
works the students can learn more about life as the literary works are usually
revealed from the real human life and at last, it makes the students be wiser
in facing any problems in life.
