This is my summary of Literary Appreciation subject

Literature and Literary Appreciation

“Literature consists of those writings which interpret the meaning of nature and life, in words of charm and power, touched with the personality of the author, in artistic forms of permanent interest”, that is what Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933) said about literature. In other words, we can simplify that literature is an art work that is revealed from human life and experience by using language that commonly beautiful which can amuse and educate the readers whether in oral or written form such as novel, poetry, poem, etc.


In studying literature, surely, we will meet a section named literary appreciation that Ogenlewe (2006) posits that ‘literary appreciation refers to the evaluation of works of imaginative literature as an intellectual or academic exercise.’ It means that literary appreciation isa process of understanding, enjoying and evaluating literary works in which the readers make judgment about the quality or value of literary work, give an opinion about a given work, classify and at last appreciate the literary work. By reading literary works it is supposed that the students can explore their own lives and improve their logical thinking skills and it means that the students are able to gain pleasure and understanding for the literature, understand its value and importance and admire its complexity. In additional, by appreciating literary works the students can learn more about life as the literary works are usually revealed from the real human life and at last, it makes the students be wiser in facing any problems in life.
There are two genres of literature which are

Genres of Literature:
The term genre means branch of literature. There are three main branches of literature, they are Poetry, Drama and Prose.
1.      Poetry.
Poetry is natural, imaginative, and emotional expressionof thoughts and feelings which popped up intuitively by using beautiful language and usually written in verse, stanza, and arranged in lines to reveal the realities that are recorded by the sense.
2.      Drama.
Drama is an art work acted on the stage before the audiences that copies actual life situations.
3.      Prose.
Prose is one of the genres of literatures that is written in the ordinary spoken or written language of human which can be fiction or non – fiction and has a message that is often conveyed without acting.
